Simu Liu Addresses Shang-Chi 2’s Long Delay
Following Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Simu Liu spoke with ScreenRant Plus. During the interview, he was asked why Marvel has still not officially announced Shang-Chi 2.
The actor jokingly replied:
“Man, if I had a nickel…”
Although the response was lighthearted, Liu admitted that he understands the frustration many fans have felt after waiting nearly five years for a sequel announcement.
Simu Liu Thanks Fans for Supporting Shang-Chi
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the project, Liu praised Marvel fans for continuing to support the character.
He said:
“Look, I’m going to take the high road here and say that it’s really incredible how much the fans continue to show up for this character and continue to express their enthusiasm. I hope they continue to do so, because I think it is making a difference.”
Liu explained that even five years after the first film’s release, fans still approach him to share how much they loved Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to the actor, that continued enthusiasm gives him hope for the sequel’s future.
Simu Liu Says He Is Ready to Return Anytime
Even though Marvel Studios has yet to reveal its plans, Liu made one thing perfectly clear—he is more than ready to return as Shang-Chi.
The actor said:
“I couldn’t wait to do more.”
He also added:
“I will be there. I will crawl through broken glass to do it if I have to.”
His comments highlight just how committed he remains to the character and the franchise.
Shang-Chi 2 Remains Outside Simu Liu’s Control
While Liu is eager to reprise the role, he confirmed that the sequel’s development is ultimately not his decision.
According to the actor, the status of Shang-Chi 2 is “unfortunately” outside of his control, meaning Marvel Studios will determine when the project officially moves forward.
The sequel has reportedly been in development since 2021, yet the studio still has not announced a release date or production schedule.
Fans Will See Shang-Chi Again Before His Solo Sequel
Although Shang-Chi 2 remains on hold, fans will not have to wait much longer to see Liu back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Doomsday will mark his second live-action appearance as Shang-Chi following his solo debut in 2021.
In addition to his live-action role, Liu has also voiced alternate versions of Shang-Chi in Disney+’s What If…? and Marvel Zombies, allowing the character to remain active within Marvel’s expanding Multiverse.
Marvel Studios has yet to provide an official timeline for Shang-Chi 2, but Simu Liu’s latest comments suggest the project has not been abandoned. Instead, it appears to be waiting for the right opportunity within the MCU’s evolving roadmap.
For now, fans can at least take comfort in knowing that Liu remains passionate about returning. If and when Marvel gives the green light, the actor has made it clear that he is ready to step back into the role immediately.
