For months, Marvel fans have speculated about who could join the cast of the MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot. Among the names frequently mentioned was Margot Robbie, with many hoping the actress would play Emma Frost. However, a new casting update appears to have put those rumors to rest.
Recent reports suggest that Marvel Studios has been conducting an extensive search for the perfect actor to portray Emma Frost. At the same time, the latest information indicates that Robbie was never considered a realistic option for the role.
X-Men Casting Search Reportedly Rules Out Margot Robbie
According to recent reports, Marvel Studios has been holding auditions for multiple roles in the upcoming X-Men reboot since May. Emma Frost’s casting process has reportedly been one of the studio’s most thorough searches.
Rumors connecting Margot Robbie to the character gained traction before reports emerged that Samara Weaving had been cast as Emma Frost. However, industry insider @krolljvar recently addressed the speculation on X, explaining:
“So auditions for X-Men has been going on since May and the Frost part is the search that has been the most thorough. That said they were always looking to audition this part like all the others so someone like Margot was never a reality since she no longer test for roles.”
According to the insider, Robbie was never viewed as a realistic candidate because she no longer auditions for major roles.
Why Margot Robbie Was Unlikely to Play Emma Frost?
The report suggests that Marvel Studios wanted to audition actors for Emma Frost rather than directly approach established stars who rarely test for roles.
Therefore, despite widespread fan interest, Robbie was apparently never part of Marvel’s casting plans. Instead, the studio focused on finding the actor who best fits its vision for the MCU’s version of the iconic mutant.
Samara Weaving Emerges as Emma Frost Favorite
Before the latest casting update, fans had already begun discussing Samara Weaving as a potential choice for Emma Frost. Deadline recently reported that Weaving had landed the role, although Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm the news.
Because Marvel has remained silent, fans will likely have to wait for an official announcement before celebrating the casting.
Marvel Studios Continues Building Its X-Men Reboot
Marvel Studios has been slowly assembling its new X-Men team for the MCU. Although many casting rumors continue to circulate online, the studio appears committed to an extensive audition process for its mutant heroes and villains.
As a result, more casting surprises could emerge in the coming months.
Could Margot Robbie Return as Harley Quinn Instead?
Even if Margot Robbie does not join the MCU, fans could still see her return to the superhero genre as Harley Quinn. Robbie previously played the character in:
- Suicide Squad (2016)
- Birds of Prey (2020)
- The Suicide Squad (2021)
Her performance received widespread praise from both fans and critics. However, her future in DC remains uncertain.
In a 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn teased Harley Quinn’s future, saying:
“That will be revealed down the line.”
For now, Marvel fans can cross Margot Robbie’s name off the Emma Frost wishlist as Marvel Studios continues shaping the future of the X-Men franchise.
