Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become one of the biggest box office hits of all time. However, despite its incredible success, Sony Pictures still does not know what lies ahead for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
The latest update comes directly from Sony chairman Tom Rothman. While fans are eager to see Holland continue in the role, the studio has admitted that his future remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Rothman made it clear that Sony hopes the actor will return for more adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sony Admits Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Future Is Still Uncertain
During a recent interview with Variety, Sony chairman Tom Rothman addressed the future of Spider-Man and Tom Holland’s involvement in the franchise.
Speaking about the situation, Rothman said:
“The honest truth is we don’t know at this point. This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years. I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope.”
Although Sony has not made any official announcements, Rothman revealed that Holland has previously expressed interest in continuing as Spider-Man.
He added that the studio “would love it if he did.”
As a result, fans may have to wait longer to learn whether Tom Holland will return to the MCU after the film’s latest adventure.
Marvel’s Biggest Hit Yet Breaks Major Box Office Records
Even though Tom Holland’s future remains undecided, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already rewritten the record books.
The film earned an impressive $355 million domestically during its opening weekend, making it the second-biggest domestic opening in box office history.
Meanwhile, the movie also generated $927 million worldwide, including $572 million from international markets. That total makes it the second-largest global opening ever, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.
Reacting to the movie’s incredible performance, Rothman said:
“What happened is miraculous.”
The Sony chairman also praised the cultural impact of the iconic superhero, saying:
“Spider-Man is uniting people across cultures and ages. People can piss on theatrical all they want, but that’s one thing that only movies — and movie theaters — can do.”
