Chris Hemsworth is officially returning as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. However, just a few months ago, a thank-you video he posted online confused—and even saddened—fans, ultimately sparking rumors that he planned to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good. Now, Hemsworth is setting the record straight. Not only is he returning as Thor, but more importantly, it seems the God of Thunder still has plenty of battles ahead.
Rumors Swirl Around Thor’s Final Appearance
In a heartfelt YouTube video, Hemsworth thanked fans for their support over the years. While he intended it as a gesture of appreciation, fans nevertheless quickly speculated that he was subtly saying goodbye to Thor. Moreover, the tone of the video, paired with nostalgic clips, further gave the impression that his MCU journey was coming to an end.
Hemsworth Sets the Record Straight
Later, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth addressed the confusion.
“It was certainly not the intent… My social media team assembled some footage and was like, ‘Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, cool.’”
Furthermore, he went on to explain how fans misunderstood the message.
“But then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here.’ We didn’t do any [damage control]; there was no damage control necessary. But a lot was read into a little.”
In reality, the video didn’t signal the end of Thor’s journey—it simply reflected a moment of appreciation and reflection.
What’s Next for Thor in Avengers: Doomsday?
Despite the rumors, Hemsworth has confirmed that he’s already working on the “next chapter” of Thor’s story. He emphasized how important the role is to him personally, further hinting that there’s still much more to come
Given how Thor’s character has evolved over the years—from the proud Asgardian warrior to a cosmic force and sometimes comic relief—it’s no surprise that fans want more. Now, in Avengers: Doomsday, Thor is expected to be a major player in the fight against Doctor Doom, arguably one of the most formidable villains ever introduced in the MCU.
A Long-Awaited On-Screen Reunion
Another highlight of the upcoming film is that it will reunite Hemsworth with Robert Downey Jr. for the first time since Avengers: Endgame (2019). For longtime fans, who’ve missed the dynamic between Thor and Iron Man, this is big news. After all, their chemistry and contrast have always been a core strength of the Avengers ensemble.
This reunion adds even more emotional weight and excitement to the already stacked storyline.
Hemsworth’s Commitment to Thor in Avengers: Doomsday
Hemsworth’s dedication to the role of Thor has only grown over the years. Rather than treating it like a job he’s eager to move on from, he continues to embrace the character and its growth.
He has called the role:
“The most significant part of my career.”
This statement speaks volumes about his commitment and passion for bringing Thor to life. He’s not done just yet.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release in December 2026, and anticipation is already running high. With Thor back in action, Robert Downey Jr. joining him, and Doctor Doom set to make a huge impact, the movie could become one of the most ambitious Avengers stories to date.
For now, fans can relax. Thor in Avengers: Doomsday is not a goodbye. It’s a continuation of one of the most legendary arcs in the MCU—and Hemsworth is far from finished.
