Marvel Studios has spent years trying to bring its new Blade movie to the big screen. However, the long-delayed project continues to face questions about its future. Now, fresh comments from Kevin Feige have once again placed the reboot in the spotlight.
The Marvel Studios president recently reflected on the project’s troubled development. In the process, he made a surprisingly blunt comment about the film’s failure to get off the ground with Mahershala Ali.
Kevin Feige Admits Blade Has Been a Major Failure
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kevin Feige discussed Marvel’s history with Blade. He also reflected on the return of Wesley Snipes as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Feige admitted that Marvel was able to bring Snipes back for the movie. However, the studio has struggled to launch its new Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali.
“I’m feeling very excited that we got Wesley back for a time in Deadpool & Wolverine, and like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.”
The comment immediately drew attention to the troubled production. After all, Marvel first announced the Blade reboot back in 2019. Mahershala Ali was attached to play the lead role from the beginning.
Nevertheless, the movie still has not reached theaters.
Kevin Feige’s Blade Comments Raise New Recasting Questions
The Blade reboot has gone through several delays and creative changes. Over the years, the project has also been linked to multiple directors and screenplay changes. Therefore, the movie’s long development has created growing uncertainty about its future.
The biggest question now concerns Mahershala Ali’s involvement. The actor remains an acclaimed performer. However, he is now 52 years old. That could become an important factor when considering the physical demands of playing Blade over multiple MCU projects.
Blade is not a traditional superhero role. The character is expected to fight vampires and other supernatural threats. Consequently, the role could require extensive action work, demanding physical preparation and long-term commitment.
That is why some fans believe Marvel should consider recasting the role before production moves forward.
Should Marvel Recast Mahershala Ali as Blade?
There is no doubt that Mahershala Ali is an excellent actor. In fact, he has already proven that he can play a Marvel character. He previously portrayed Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes in Netflix’s Luke Cage. However, Marvel has also faced a unique challenge with the Blade reboot. The project has spent years in development without reaching production.
Reports have previously suggested that Ali was unhappy with earlier versions of the screenplay. While the exact details surrounding the production remain unclear, the repeated delays have created a difficult situation for everyone involved.
At this point, Marvel may need to make a major decision.
The studio could continue developing the movie with Ali. Alternatively, it could start fresh with a new actor and a new creative direction. Although recasting would be a major move, it could give the franchise a longer runway.
Kevin Feige Needs to Finalize the Blade Story First
Before Marvel recasts Blade, however, the studio should solve the biggest problem first: the screenplay. Casting a new actor will not fix a weak or unfinished story. Instead, Marvel needs to finalize the script and establish a clear creative direction for the reboot.
Once the screenplay is ready, the studio can decide which actor best fits the role.
That approach could also help Marvel avoid another long period of development problems. After all, the Blade reboot has already spent years moving through different creative stages. A strong story should come first. The right actor should then be chosen to lead it.
Could Damson Idris Replace Mahershala Ali as Blade?
If Marvel does decide to recast the role, Damson Idris could be an interesting choice. Idris is younger than Ali and has plenty of time to grow into a long-term MCU role. That could make him an appealing option for Marvel Studios.
The Blade character could potentially appear in several future MCU projects. Therefore, Marvel may want an actor who can commit to the role for many years.
Idris could also bring a different energy to the character. While Ali has the experience and acting talent to play Blade, a younger actor could offer Marvel greater long-term flexibility. Of course, no official casting change has been announced.
Marvel’s Blade Reboot Still Needs a Clear Future
Kevin Feige’s comments have once again highlighted the difficult journey of Marvel’s Blade reboot. The project began with enormous excitement in 2019. Since then, however, years of delays have left its future uncertain.
Mahershala Ali remains a talented choice for the character. Still, the long development process has changed the circumstances surrounding the project.
For that reason, Marvel may need to seriously consider every option. That could include continuing with Ali or recasting the role entirely. However, one thing should come before any casting decision. Marvel needs to finish the Blade screenplay and establish a clear plan for the movie. Only then can the studio determine whether Mahershala Ali is still the right Blade for the MCU’s future.
