Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery are heading toward a massive box office showdown. Two of the biggest upcoming sci-fi blockbusters will compete for audiences during the same holiday season. Now, Kevin Feige has addressed the highly anticipated clash and revealed why Avengers: Doomsday moved from its original release window.
As a result, fans have already given the showdown a fitting name: “Dunesday.”
Now, Kevin Feige has also discussed the film’s massive multiverse story and Robert Downey Jr.’s surprising casting as Doctor Doom.
Kevin Feige Addresses the Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 Clash
The upcoming box office battle has already become one of the most talked-about movie showdowns among fans. Both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three will compete for audiences during the same holiday season.
Warner Bros. has secured IMAX screens for Dune: Part Three. Meanwhile, Disney is countering with its new Infinity Vision screens for Avengers: Doomsday.
Therefore, both movies will compete for premium screens and audience attention.
Discussing the highly anticipated clash, Kevin Feige said:
“Well, one of the jobs of filmmakers is to make sure a lot, a lot of people go to the theaters. So on the one hand, it’s exciting to hope that theaters all over the world will be packed that weekend.”
However, Feige also explained that the release-date clash did not cause Marvel to move Avengers: Doomsday from its original release window.
Why Avengers: Doomsday Moved From Its Original Release Window?
Avengers: Doomsday was originally expected to arrive in May. However, Marvel Studios needed more time to complete the ambitious project.
Explaining the reason behind the delay, Kevin Feige said:
“On the other hand, we couldn’t finish making Avengers: Doomsday in May, so it had to be moved to December.”
As a result, the film’s new release window created a major clash with Dune: Part Three.
Still, the new timing could make Avengers: Doomsday one of the biggest holiday movies ever. The film is expected to unite several major Marvel franchises in a story that could completely reshape the MCU.
Kevin Feige Teases Avengers: Doomsday’s Massive Multiverse Story
According to Kevin Feige, Avengers: Doomsday will finally bring together some of Marvel’s biggest superhero teams.
The movie will unite the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom following the Disney/Fox merger.
Feige described the upcoming movie as:
“A cosmic collision with some of your favourite characters in each universe.”
Furthermore, the film will explore a conflict between multiple universes and Earths.
Explaining the film’s premise, Feige said:
“In Avengers: Endgame, everyone was united against Thanos. In Avengers: Doomsday, the situation is even more precarious: three different universes, three different Earths, literally colliding with each other. The question then arises: will these heroes kill each other to protect their own worlds, or might they find a way to work together to save all three worlds? And how will Doctor Doom intervene?”
As a result, Doctor Doom could play a crucial role in the conflict between the three universes.
The premise also suggests that the heroes may not immediately work together. Instead, they could initially see each other as threats. Therefore, the film may feature a major conflict between the different superhero teams before they face an even greater danger.
Avengers: Doomsday Takes Inspiration From Marvel Comics
Kevin Feige also confirmed that the upcoming Avengers movies will draw heavily from Marvel Comics.
Specifically, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were largely inspired by the iconic Time Runs Out and Secret Wars storylines.
Feige explained:
“Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were largely inspired by the storylines of Marvel Comics’ ‘Time Runs Out’ and ‘Secret Wars,’ so—it’s customary—the comics provide significant guidance for the films we’re making.”
This could explain the movie’s focus on multiple universes, collapsing realities, and the threat of a massive multiversal conflict.
Moreover, the story appears to be building toward the long-awaited Secret Wars adaptation. The events of Avengers: Doomsday could, therefore, have major consequences for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kevin Feige Explains Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Casting
One of the biggest surprises surrounding Avengers: Doomsday was the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
After playing Tony Stark for more than a decade, Downey Jr. will now return to the MCU as one of Marvel’s most iconic villains.
However, Kevin Feige made it clear that Marvel did not want to simply bring Tony Stark back.
“We didn’t want to just bring Tony Stark back. The ending of Avengers: Endgame was one of our proudest moments, seeing audiences worldwide react to Tony’s sacrifice, so we didn’t want him to just return ‘magically.’ But in Marvel, there are many opportunities to see actors return in new ways.”
Instead, Marvel wanted to find the perfect actor for Doctor Doom.
Why Robert Downey Jr. Was Perfect for Doctor Doom?
Feige explained that Marvel wanted to cast the greatest possible actor for the role.
“When we were casting for Doctor Doom, we said: we need to find the greatest actor in the world. Doctor Doom is one of the most interesting characters. He’s intelligent, has an extremely high IQ; he can be a villain, but he also sees himself as a hero. We went to see Oppenheimer—for which he won an Oscar—and we finally realized.”
According to Feige, Downey Jr.’s performance in Oppenheimer helped Marvel realize that he could bring something special to the role.
The casting also follows the same philosophy Marvel used when it chose Chris Evans as Captain America, even though he had already played another Marvel character.
Kevin Feige Calls Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Casting a Risk
Kevin Feige compared Robert Downey Jr.’s casting to Marvel’s decision to cast Chris Evans as Captain America.
Feige explained:
“Just like when we were casting Captain America, we didn’t want to exclude Chris Evans just because he’d played other Marvel characters, and in this situation, we thought: how great, bold, and risky it would be to bring back our most famous hero to play our most famous villain. Thank goodness, he agreed.”
As a result, Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom could become one of the most talked-about casting decisions in MCU history.
More importantly, the decision allows Marvel to bring back one of its most famous stars without undoing Tony Stark’s emotional ending in Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
The movie will arrive on the same day as Dune: Part Three, creating one of the biggest box office clashes in recent history.
For now, fans will have to wait and see which movie dominates the holiday season. However, with the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom all involved, Avengers: Doomsday could become one of Marvel Studios’ biggest theatrical events ever.
