The development of Daredevil: Born Again brought several unexpected twists. However, one surprising detail has now come to light. A major Marvel star nearly stepped behind the camera for the series, which could have changed its creative direction.
Interestingly, this revelation adds another layer to the show’s already complex production history. Over time, Marvel projects have increasingly allowed actors to explore creative roles beyond acting, making this missed opportunity even more notable.
Daredevil: Born Again Almost Had Tom Hiddleston as Director
During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Charlie Cox shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about Daredevil: Born Again. Marvel originally scheduled Tom Hiddleston to direct an episode.
Cox explained:
“The first season of Born Again, before the strike, was going to be 18 episodes. Tom was going to direct one of the episodes,”
Moreover, this plan highlights how ambitious the original vision for the show truly was. At that stage, Marvel Studios aimed to deliver a much larger narrative scope, which could have allowed for more creative experimentation.
Hiddleston’s potential involvement as a director also made sense. After all, his long tenure as Loki has given him deep insight into the MCU’s tone, character development, and storytelling approach.
Major Changes Reshaped Daredevil: Born Again
Initially, Marvel designed Daredevil: Born Again as an 18-episode season. However, after a creative overhaul, the series dropped to just 9 episodes.
As a result, several planned elements were removed, including Hiddleston’s directorial debut within the MCU series. This shift came after Marvel decided to rework the show’s direction to better align with audience expectations and the character’s grounded tone.
Cox further added:
“One of the great losses on the back half of that original season. Even though the changes that were made to that show were needed, necessary, and made it much better, but he was going to direct episode 12 or something.”
Therefore, while the changes improved the final product, they also led to missed opportunities. In particular, fans lost the chance to see how Hiddleston would interpret the darker, street-level world of Daredevil.
Daredevil: Born Again Creative Reset Improved the Series
Although the reduction in episodes disappointed some fans, the creative reset ultimately benefited Daredevil: Born Again. The updated direction helped refine the storytelling and improve overall reception.
Furthermore, the tighter episode count allowed the narrative to feel more focused and consistent. This approach ensured that character arcs, especially for Matt Murdock, received stronger development.
At the same time, the shift meant losing unique contributions like Hiddleston’s involvement. Given his long history with Marvel, his perspective could have added something special. His understanding of complex characters might have brought a fresh visual and emotional layer to the series.
Currently, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has already concluded on Disney+. Meanwhile, Marvel is expected to release Season 3 in 2027.
On the other hand, Tom Hiddleston is set to return as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday. This upcoming project will likely play a major role in shaping the future of the MCU.
Even so, it remains unclear whether he will explore directing roles in future Marvel projects. However, considering Marvel’s growing trend of giving actors creative opportunities behind the scenes, the possibility still exists.
Nevertheless, fans continue to hope that he may eventually step behind the camera. If that happens, it could open the door for more actor-driven storytelling within the MCU.
