Marvel’s X-Men Reboot could receive a surprising title change before it reaches theatres. Following the 2026 D23 presentation, Disney listed the upcoming MCU movie as “Untitled X-Men” on its release calendar. That wording has raised questions about whether Marvel plans to give the film a different final title.
However, Marvel has not confirmed a title change. The studio may simply use “Untitled X-Men” as a working designation while the project remains in development.
At D23, Marvel focused on the cast and introduced Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. The studio also confirmed Jake Schreier as director and set the movie for a May 5, 2028 theatrical release.
X-Men Gets an “Untitled X-Men” Listing
The X-Men currently carries an unusual name on Disney’s release calendar.
Instead of using X-Men as the official title, Disney lists the movie as “Untitled X-Men.” That wording could simply indicate that Marvel has not finalized the title.
Studios often use temporary names during development. Therefore, fans should not assume that Marvel will permanently abandon the X-Men title.
At the same time, the listing creates an interesting possibility. Marvel could choose a subtitle or another title to distinguish its new mutant saga from the previous Fox franchise.
For now, the studio has not revealed its final choice.
Could Marvel Change the Movie’s Title?
A title change would make sense if Marvel wants to clearly separate its new X-Men Reboot from the earlier movies.
The previous franchise used the simple X-Men name for its 2000 film, while later entries adopted subtitles such as X2, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Marvel could follow a similar strategy for its MCU version. However, the studio could also keep the straightforward X-Men title because the name already carries enormous recognition.
The current “Untitled X-Men” designation does not reveal Marvel’s final decision.
Jake Schreier Directs the New X-Men Movie
Jake Schreier will direct the X-Men after his work on Thunderbolts.
Marvel has also assembled writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo for the project. The creative team gives the movie a strong connection to Thunderbolts, since Schreier and Sung Jin previously worked on that MCU project.
Marvel continues to keep the plot largely secret. However, the studio’s casting choices already reveal several important characters that will shape the new mutant era.
The movie will also introduce the X-Men as a newly recast team within the MCU, giving Marvel an opportunity to establish its own version of the mutant heroes.
Marvel Reveals the new X-Men Cast
Marvel used D23 to reveal the main cast for the X-Men Reboot.
The announced lineup includes:
- Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
- Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops
- Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier/Professor X
- Inde Navarrette as Rogue
- Maya Boyd as Storm
- Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
Marvel confirmed the lineup during its D23 presentation, giving fans their first official look at the actors who will form the new mutant team.
The cast also gives the movie a strong mix of established comic-book characters. Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Rogue, Emma Frost, and Professor X all have deep histories within Marvel Comics.
Consequently, the movie could introduce a much larger mutant mythology from the beginning.
Adam Driver Joins the X-Men as Mister Sinister
The biggest casting surprise came when Adam Driver appeared in a video during the D23 presentation.
Driver confirmed that he will play Mister Sinister, also known as Nathaniel Essex. Marvel also connected the character to the name Nathaniel Milbury in its announcement.
The casting immediately created another major storyline for the X-Men Reboot.
Mister Sinister has strong connections to mutant genetics, Jean Grey, and Cyclops in the comics. Those connections could give Marvel several ways to integrate him into the new MCU story.
However, Marvel has not revealed exactly how the villain will fit into the movie.
Mister Sinister Could Have Major Connections to Jean Grey and Cyclops
Adam Driver’s casting becomes particularly interesting because the X-Men Reboot also features Jean Grey and Cyclops.
In Marvel Comics, Mister Sinister has a long history of studying mutant genetics and taking an interest in the Summers and Grey bloodlines. That connection could create a direct link between the villain and two of the movie’s central characters.
Marvel could therefore use Sinister as more than a traditional villain.
The character could instead help establish the movie’s larger mythology around mutant origins, genetics, and the emergence of powerful mutant families.
Nevertheless, fans will have to wait for Marvel to reveal the actual story.
Marvel Reveals the New Mutant Cast
The current X-Men Reboot cast already includes several major characters, but Marvel has plenty of room to expand the lineup.
The X-Men comics feature dozens of important mutants, including Wolverine, Beast, Iceman, Angel, Mystique, Kitty Pryde, Gambit, and many others.
Marvel has not announced every character for the new movie. Therefore, additional casting reveals could arrive as production continues.
Furthermore, the studio could use future MCU projects to introduce more mutants before the X-Men team fully establishes itself.
When Will the New X-Men Movie Release?
Marvel currently plans to release the X-Men Reboot in theatres on May 5, 2028. D23 confirmed the date alongside the main cast announcement.
That gives Marvel significant time to complete development and production.
The studio can also use that period to introduce more mutants elsewhere in the MCU before the X-Men movie arrives.
For now, the May 2028 date remains the confirmed theatrical target, although future schedule changes remain possible.
Will Marvel Keep the X-Men Title?
The X-Men Reboot still does not have a confirmed final title.
Disney’s “Untitled X-Men” listing could simply reflect Marvel’s current development stage. However, the studio could eventually announce a subtitle or a completely different name.
Either way, Marvel has already established the project’s major creative pieces. Jake Schreier will direct, a new cast will portray the iconic mutants, and Adam Driver will play Mister Sinister.
Ultimately, the title represents only one piece of the larger reboot.
The bigger story involves Marvel finally establishing the X-Men as a core part of the MCU. With a new generation of actors and a major villain already confirmed, the studio appears ready to give the mutants a fresh beginning.
For now, “Untitled X-Men” remains the official calendar designation. Whether Marvel eventually keeps X-Men as the final title or surprises fans with something new remains one of the project’s biggest unanswered questions.
