Sadie Sink’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the upcoming MCU movie. Although several rumors have connected the actress to major Marvel characters, Marvel Studios has yet to reveal who she will play.
Now, director Destin Daniel Cretton has explained why the studio is keeping Sink’s character secret. Moreover, his comments suggest that the mystery could be important to the movie’s story.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director Teases Sadie Sink’s Secret Role
Sadie Sink has been linked to several possible Marvel characters. Rumors have suggested that she could play Jean Grey, Shathra, Mayday Parker, or Firestar. However, none of these reports have been officially confirmed.
Cretton recently addressed the secrecy surrounding Sink’s role. While speaking about the movie, the director admitted that he understands why some fans want every detail revealed. However, he also explained that he personally prefers going into movies without knowing too much beforehand.
“If people are gonna get mad, I can’t control that! I wish everything was a secret. Some people wanna know everything, and some people don’t. There are certain people like me — if I know I’m gonna watch a movie, I try not to even watch the trailers.”
The director then offered an even bigger tease. According to Cretton, there is a specific reason why Marvel is refusing to reveal Sink’s character.
“But you’ll see when you watch the movie that there’s a very real reason not to tell people who Sadie Sink is playing. And I don’t think you’ll get mad at it. I think you’ll be like, ‘Oh, I’m glad I didn’t know that.'”
As a result, fans may want to avoid digging too deeply into the rumors surrounding Sink before the movie arrives.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Features a Four-Year Spider-Man Montage
Cretton also discussed one of the film’s most ambitious sequences. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will reportedly feature an opening montage showing what Peter Parker has been doing over the past four years.
The sequence follows Spider-Man as he battles several familiar villains while protecting New York City. The montage will also help explain what Peter has been doing while his former friends are away at school.
However, filming the sequence was not easy.
“Montages suck! Every shot is not just a new setup, it’s a new location. It’s sometimes a new time period. So they suck to shoot, but they’re really fun to watch. We’re telling the story of what Peter Parker did over the four years that his friends are at school. And who we were going to include was less of a concern and more what we were trying to show is him cleaning up the city, and which [book] covers kind of helped us tell that story.”
Cretton added that the team used comic book covers as inspiration for the sequence. Therefore, the montage could give fans a unique visual look at Spider-Man’s unseen adventures.
“And what was fun, was choosing the covers that allowed us to imagine what could’ve happened a little bit before or a little bit after that frame that we’re all used to seeing.”
Tom Holland Recreated Iconic Spider-Man Comic Poses
Tom Holland also impressed Cretton while filming the montage. The actor reportedly recreated several iconic Spider-Man poses inspired by comic book covers.
According to the director, some of those poses were extremely difficult for a real person to perform. Nevertheless, Holland was able to study the images and recreate them on camera.
“[Tom’s] ability to control his body to get into the pose of a cover — we’d look at the cover, and some of the covers are not necessarily something that the human body can get into, the way that these poses are. He was able to look at it and, in just a few takes, he would go and do it, and we’d analyze what his body was doing, and he’d say, “Oh, I think I can, yeah, I think I can do it better,” and he’d go back in. It was pretty amazing to watch.”
As a result, the opening sequence could become one of the most visually exciting parts of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
What Does the Brand New Day Title Mean?
Cretton also explained the meaning behind the movie’s title. According to the director, Brand New Day reflects Peter Parker’s emotional journey throughout the story.
However, Peter will not necessarily feel like he is starting over when the movie begins.
“The title, to me, does reflect where he ends up. The journey of this movie is about searching for that feeling of a brand-new day. I don’t think he really has that feeling in the beginning of this movie. And I do feel like that’s the theme of this film.”
This suggests that Peter could face another difficult chapter before finally reaching a more hopeful point in his life.
Destin Daniel Cretton Wants to Make Shang-Chi 2
While discussing his future plans, Cretton also revealed that he recently spoke with writer Dave Callaham about a potential Shang-Chi 2.
The director previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which introduced Simu Liu’s hero to the MCU. Now, Cretton appears eager to return to that world.
“I also would love to see Shang-Chi 2. I was talking to Dave Callaham, our writer, about it just a few weeks ago, so fingers crossed.”
For now, however, Cretton’s attention remains on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie is expected to explore a new chapter in Peter Parker’s life while keeping several major surprises hidden.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026.
Until then, Sadie Sink’s MCU role will remain a mystery. However, Destin Daniel Cretton’s comments suggest that the secret could be more important than fans realize.
