Ray Winstone recently shared his experience on Black Widow and revealed that he even requested a recast when Marvel ordered reshoots. The actor, who portrayed Dreykov, the villainous head of the Red Room, shared his frustrations and insights into modern Hollywood during a recent interview. His candid remarks offer fans a rare glimpse into the challenges actors face within massive franchise productions.
Why Ray Winstone Requested a Recast in Black Widow
Winstone recalled his excitement during the initial shoot of Black Widow, speaking at the Sarajevo Film Festival.
“I collaborated with the amazing director Cate Shortland, and we planned exactly how my character would be,” Winstone said via Variety.
“He was like a pedophile running around all these girls, and they’d become Black Widows. Everyone used to applaud us on set. It was probably the best thing I’ve done for a long time.”
However, after filming wrapped, Marvel requested reshoots for all of his scenes, which frustrated the actor.
“I come home after finishing the job and get a call saying we need to do some reshoots. I say, how many scenes?“[Cate] says, ‘All of them.’ I told her she should recast [the role], but my contract required me to do it,” Winstone explained.
“I go back, they do my hair all nice, put me in the suit, and I couldn’t do it. I’d already done it. I thought, ‘I’m not doing it now. I’ve done it. That’s how it’s going to be.’ That’s rejection, you know? There’s nothing worse than doing something, leaving it on the floor, and then being told it’s not right.”
Despite his frustration, Winstone ultimately returned for the reshoots, and his role remained in the final cut of Black Widow, showing both his professionalism and commitment to the character.
Hollywood Business Over Cultural Films
The actor also criticized the modern Hollywood system, noting how blockbuster franchises like Marvel often prioritize ticket sales over culturally significant films.
“It’s all about selling tickets. We see what’s happening in Hollywood with Marvel and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “There is room for it, and it’s fun, but it takes away from getting cultural films made, which are best for the actors, [and] are really good acting parts. It’s getting more and more difficult to do that. If you’re not on social media now, they might not even consider you for a movie because they want a fanbase to come with that.”
Winstone’s comments highlight a growing concern among actors and filmmakers about the balance between artistic storytelling and commercial demands. Many industry professionals feel that large franchises, while popular, sometimes overshadow smaller projects that offer deeper creative opportunities.
For fans who want to revisit Winstone’s portrayal of Dreykov, Black Widow is currently available for streaming on Disney+. The film highlights both the intensity of the Red Room storyline and the dedication of the actors who bring these characters to life.
The success of Black Widow also demonstrates how important strong performances are in balancing blockbuster spectacle with character-driven storytelling. Winstone’s role, though villainous, added depth and tension that resonated with audiences worldwide.
