The Marvel fandom is once again buzzing about Scarlet Witchs’ fate. During a recent conversation, WandaVision director Matt Shakman offered a brief but compelling comment on whether Wanda Maximoff is truly gone from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nearly three years after her supposed death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the door might still be open for her return.
“Wanda’s Never Gone,” Says Shakman
While speaking with ScreenRant, Shakman said something that instantly caught the attention of fans everywhere:
“Wanda’s never gone.”
Though short, the quote strongly implies that Scarlet Witchs’ journey may not be over. In Multiverse of Madness, Wanda sacrifices herself to destroy every copy of the Darkhold—but as many fans noted, her death was never clearly shown. That ambiguity, combined with Shakman’s statement, leaves the possibility wide open for her to come back, whether in her original form or through a multiversal variant.
Scarlet Witchs’ Arc Could Still Continue
The idea of Scarlet Witchs’ return isn’t far-fetched. Marvel Studios has consistently revived characters in creative ways, whether through time travel, parallel universes, or alternate realities. Wanda Maximoff, being one of the MCU’s most powerful figures, has the potential to survive or re-emerge under new circumstances.
WandaVision Remains a Defining Moment
Shakman has always spoken fondly of his time on WandaVision, which earned him two Emmy nominations. Reflecting on his experience, he told ScreenRant:
“They’re both so joyful. I think of these two as the highlights of my directing career,” he revealed. “Working on WandaVision was amazing. That world, the cast is incredible. Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Kathryn Hahn, (everybody)…”
Clearly, the series left a lasting impact on him. And considering how central Wanda was to the project’s success, it’s no surprise that the idea of continuing Scarlet Witchs’ story feels close to his heart.
How Scarlet Witchs’ Future Connects to Fantastic Four
Shakman also compared his WandaVision experience to his current work on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, noting his passion for creativity and emotional storytelling. He explained:
“We had to build a family that felt lived in, that felt real… So, both of them were stylistic and tonal experiments, which I love doing as a filmmaker.”
This continuity in tone and theme makes him an ideal creative mind to further explore Scarlet Witchs’ evolution, especially if Marvel wants to bring emotional depth to its next major saga.
What’s Next for Scarlet Witchs’ Role in the MCU?
Although Marvel has made no official announcements, Shakman’s statement—“Wanda’s never gone”—offers hope. With the multiverse playing such a key role in recent and upcoming phases, there’s more than enough narrative room to bring Wanda back in a new and exciting way.
Whether through a cameo, a variant, or a full return to the spotlight, Scarlet Witchs’ story could continue to unfold in ways that surprise fans and honor her past arcs.
