The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced countless iconic characters. However, the MCU didn’t give all of them the storylines they truly deserved. In fact, some MCU villains had incredible potential. Yet, weak writing, rushed arcs, and jarring tonal shifts ultimately wasted them. So, let’s explore five of the most disappointing examples—villains who could’ve been great but still leave fans frustrated.
Gorr the God Butcher — Thor: Love and Thunder

Marvel Studios promoted Christian Bale’s Gorr as one of the most terrifying MCU villains to date. A god-slaying figure driven by personal tragedy, he had the emotional depth and menace to become an unforgettable antagonist. Unfortunately, Thor: Love and Thunder leaned too heavily into comedy, which severely undermined Gorr’s dark presence.
As a result, many fans blame director Taika Waititi’s quirky tone for diluting the villain’s emotional impact. Rather than showcasing Gorr’s righteous fury and tragic descent, the film ultimately reduced him to a secondary character, leaving audiences deeply disappointed.
Taskmaster — Black Widow / Thunderbolts

Taskmaster was a fan-favorite villain from the comics, known for their ability to mimic the fighting styles of any opponent. In the MCU, the character was reimagined as Antonia Dreykov—a change most fans accepted. Even so, the filmmakers failed to execute it effectively.
Still, Black Widow barely scratched the surface of Taskmaster’s unique powers. Moreover, the lack of a meaningful showdown with Natasha and minimal character development frustrated audiences. To make matters worse, recent Thunderbolts updates hint that Marvel may have closed the book on Taskmaster’s story—ultimately wasting one of the MCU’s most promising villains.
Malekith — Thor: The Dark World

Malekith, played by Christopher Eccleston, had the chance to be a memorable dark elf villain with world-ending ambitions. However, his portrayal was widely criticized for being bland and forgettable.
Fans who loved Malekith’s chaotic and theatrical comic version were disappointed by his lifeless MCU interpretation. Ironically, many believe that Taika Waititi’s more playful tone could have made Malekith a better, more dynamic antagonist. Sadly, this MCU villain remains one of the franchise’s least impactful.
Ultron — Avengers: Age of Ultron

Voiced by James Spader, Ultron entered the MCU with major expectations. Tony Stark created Ultron as an artificial intelligence designed to be a long-term, morally complex threat. But instead, the Avengers introduced him and defeated him in a single film.
Despite Spader’s captivating performance, the villain never got a chance to evolve. Fans still feel that Ultron deserved a deeper arc and more time to explore his philosophical conflict with the Avengers. Rumors hint at a potential return in a future Vision series—but for now, his early exit still stings.
MCU Villains Like Ultron Deserved Better
Ultron had the potential to redefine villainy in the MCU. His defeat in one film left audiences feeling like the studio missed out on a multi-film story that could’ve been unforgettable.
Dormammu — Doctor Strange

Dormammu made a striking visual debut in Doctor Strange, appearing as a cosmic force beyond comprehension. However, the “bargain” scene—while clever—turned his role into a bit of a punchline.
Fans hoped Dormammu would return in Multiverse of Madness, especially given the film’s exploration of powerful magical threats. Yet, Marvel left the character out entirely, creating a massive gap where a formidable MCU villain could’ve taken center stage.
Why Dormammu Remains One of the Most Wasted MCU Villains
Many feel Dormammu’s full potential remains untapped. As a reality-warping threat, he could pose danger across the multiverse. Instead, he remains sidelined, and fans are still waiting for a proper comeback.
Why These MCU Villains Still Frustrate Fans
The MCU continues to evolve, introducing new characters and storylines. But these five MCU villains remain examples of missed opportunities. Whether due to poor tone, limited screen time, or rushed exits, they failed to leave the impact fans expected.
Even now, many still hold out hope for redemption arcs or future appearances. But until that happens, these villains stand as reminders that even in a franchise as massive as the MCU, not every character gets the treatment they deserve.
