Marvel Studios is promising something very different with Avengers: Doomsday. However, despite the excitement surrounding the film, many fans are starting to question whether the MCU can truly reinvent itself while still depending heavily on legacy characters.
The upcoming crossover film already marks a huge moment for the franchise. After all, it brings back the Russo Brothers for their first Marvel project since Avengers: Endgame. At the same time, several original MCU stars are reportedly returning as well.
Because of that, the movie’s biggest promise may already face one major challenge.
Russo Brothers Promise a Major Shift for Avengers: Doomsday
During a recent interview, Joe Russo described Avengers: Doomsday as a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He explained:
“Doomsday is a complete reinvention. It’s another swing. I don’t think the audience is expecting it at all — what happens in the movie and its tone and its subject matter. It feels like another profound shift for them in that serialized story.”
Naturally, those comments immediately generated excitement among Marvel fans. The Russo Brothers previously helped reshape the MCU with films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Therefore, expectations for Avengers: Doomsday are already extremely high.
Legacy MCU Heroes Still Dominate the Story
Although Marvel is teasing a “complete reinvention,” the studio still appears heavily focused on original MCU characters.
For example, Chris Evans is reportedly returning as Steve Rogers. That news surprised many fans because Avengers: Endgame already gave the character an emotional ending. In that film, Steve passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson before seemingly retiring from hero life.
Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth is also returning as Thor. As a result, Marvel continues relying on some of its oldest and most recognizable heroes to lead major Avengers movies.
Even more notably, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. In addition, rumors continue suggesting Iron Man himself could appear again during either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.
Because of these decisions, some fans believe Marvel’s “reinvention” may not feel entirely new.
Avengers: Doomsday May Struggle to Feel Truly Different
The biggest issue facing Avengers: Doomsday is simple. Marvel wants the movie to represent a fresh chapter, yet it still depends heavily on nostalgia.
On one hand, bringing back beloved MCU actors can create massive excitement. In fact, many longtime viewers are eager to see the original Avengers together again.
However, relying too much on legacy heroes may also prevent newer characters from fully taking center stage.
The Multiverse Saga introduced several new heroes, including Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Sam Wilson’s Captain America. Nevertheless, many of those characters still have not received the same level of focus as Marvel’s original stars.
Therefore, Avengers: Doomsday could face criticism if audiences feel the franchise is repeating old ideas instead of moving forward.
Marvel Eventually Needs a New MCU Era
Marvel Studios clearly understands the value of nostalgia. Projects connected to classic MCU heroes consistently generate stronger reactions online and often attract wider audiences.
Still, the franchise may eventually need to fully commit to a new generation of heroes.
The MCU cannot rely on characters like Iron Man, Steve Rogers, and Thor forever. While multiverse storytelling allows Marvel to revisit iconic characters, the studio also risks slowing the development of its newer heroes.
As a result, Avengers: Doomsday may become one of the MCU’s most important projects yet. The film could either successfully reinvent the franchise or further prove that Marvel still struggles to move beyond its Infinity Saga stars.
Marvel Studios currently plans to release Avengers: Doomsday in theaters on December 18, 2026.
Until then, fans will continue debating whether the movie can truly deliver the “complete reinvention” the Russo Brothers are promising.
