Jon Bernthal has shared a major update about his future as Frank Castle in the MCU following Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Interestingly, the actor sounds fully open to returning as long as one important condition is met.
The actor recently discussed his future as Punisher while promoting The Punisher: One Last Kill. As a result, Marvel fans now have a much clearer idea of what Bernthal wants moving forward.
Jon Bernthal Wants Creative Control Over Punisher’s MCU Future
While speaking with Esquire about The Punisher: One Last Kill, Bernthal explained that he is interested in continuing to play Frank Castle beyond Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
However, he also made it clear that he wants major creative involvement in future projects.
“I’m really down to keep doing more.”
Bernthal then added:
“But I think I have to be the one that’s making it.”
That statement highlights how personally invested Bernthal has become in the future of Frank Castle. In fact, his role behind the scenes has already expanded significantly.
For The Punisher: One Last Kill, Bernthal:
- Starred as Frank Castle
- Co-wrote the project alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green
- Served as executive producer
Because of that involvement, many fans believe Marvel Studios may continue giving Bernthal more creative freedom with the character.
Jon Bernthal Teases a Different Version of Frank Castle
In another interview with ScreenRant, Bernthal hinted that One Last Kill changes Frank Castle in a meaningful way.
According to the actor, audiences may soon see a more personal and emotionally driven version of the Punisher.
“I do think that there are ways now, after this special, that we can find him in a place where I’m not going to tip off what’s coming…”
He continued:
“I think you’re going to get a version of him going after the bad guys, going after the people that are causing harm and havoc to good people.”
Bernthal also teased a more emotional direction for Frank Castle moving forward.
“I think he’s going to be able to start personalizing that. And with Frank, when he personalizes something, it’s something to deal with.”
As a result, Marvel fans could soon see a more layered and intense version of Frank Castle in future MCU stories.
Another Punisher MCU Project Is Already Rumored
Recently, insider Daniel Richtman claimed that Marvel Studios is reportedly developing another Punisher-related project following One Last Kill.
At the moment, Marvel has not officially confirmed the report. Nevertheless, speculation continues to grow online.
The rumored project could reportedly become:
- Another Special Presentation
- A Disney+ series
- A standalone feature film
Given Bernthal’s recent comments, it appears likely that he would only return if he remains heavily involved creatively.
Punisher’s MCU Future Looks Bigger Than Ever
Frank Castle’s role inside the MCU is rapidly expanding. In addition, Marvel appears increasingly interested in street-level storytelling.
Currently:
- The Punisher: One Last Kill is streaming on Disney+
- Frank Castle will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
- Rumors continue about additional street-level MCU projects
Most importantly, the upcoming Spider-Man film will mark Bernthal’s Punisher making his big-screen MCU debut.
Because of that, anticipation surrounding the character is now higher than ever.
Punisher vs Spider-Man Could Become the MCU’s Most Intense Conflict
Although official plot details remain secret, early footage and reports suggest that Peter Parker and Frank Castle may clash throughout the movie.
Their conflict comes down to one major difference:
- Spider-Man refuses to kill
- Punisher does not
That ideological divide could easily become one of the film’s most compelling storylines. Furthermore, it may force Peter Parker to confront darker questions about justice and morality.
If handled correctly, the dynamic between Spider-Man and Punisher could become one of the MCU’s most memorable rivalries in years.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently scheduled to release on July 31, 2026.
