The future of Eternals 2 remains uncertain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, director Chloé Zhao has now expressed her thoughts on a potential sequel. Looking back on the 2021 film, Zhao explored its deeper themes. Furthermore, she shared her hope to continue the story of the celestial characters, even though Marvel Studios has not confirmed any plans for a sequel.
Chloé Zhao Expresses Interest in Directing Eternals 2
During a recent press tour for her new film Hamnet, Zhao spoke about Eternals and its complex mythology. While the original movie set up several major storylines, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed in 2024 that,
“There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2.”
Consequently, fans were left wondering if the characters would return to the MCU.
When asked about bringing the celestial beings back, Zhao responded enthusiastically:
“I would love that!”
She then elaborated on her philosophical approach to the story, explaining that she always envisioned Eternals as a tale about gods grappling with humanity. As a result, this perspective set the 2021 film apart from other MCU entries. Zhao also mentioned that she enjoys exploring the ethical and emotional dimensions of these god-like characters, which gives the film a deeper resonance than typical superhero fare.
The Philosophical Approach of Eternals
Zhao also discussed the deeper meaning of the film:
“Look, you are right, and you understood it. It is about a pantheon of gods discussing the nature of humanity and ultimately their judgment. Which is what Arishem said, ‘I will be back for judgment.’”
She also explained the purpose behind the brief plays in the movie:
“The reason why those brief plays existed is for humanity to see how the gods are observing us. This allowed us to reflect on our role in the cycle of the universe. We could ask ourselves: Are we doing a good job? Do we treat each other with kindness? Have we truly come to understand ourselves?”
Moreover, Zhao highlighted that MCU films act as modern myths, which makes them the perfect medium to explore philosophical ideas. She concluded:
“So, I would love to bring them back and have more discussion about the world we live in. I am really proud of it.”
It’s clear that Zhao sees the Eternals universe as more than just a superhero story; it’s an opportunity to ask profound questions about human nature, morality, and the universe. This perspective makes the idea of a sequel particularly intriguing, as it could continue to explore these larger philosophical themes.

It has been four years since Eternals premiered in theaters. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has yet to announce a sequel. Nevertheless, Zhao’s comments leave fans hopeful that the celestial saga could continue in the MCU.
