Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, however, is already facing major production changes. According to a trusted insider report, the film’s second unit director has been removed — even though he previously worked on some of the most action-heavy superhero movies in recent years. As a result, it has raised questions about how this shift might affect the film’s action sequences going forward.
Why Avengers: Doomsday Made the Sudden Change
To begin with, the shake-up was first reported by industry scooper Daniel Richtman (a.k.a. DanielRPK), who revealed that Robert Alonzo, the second unit director on Avengers: Doomsday, was let go due to “dissatisfaction with his work.” As second unit director, Alonzo was responsible for overseeing supplementary scenes, which typically include fight choreography, vehicle sequences, and other stunt-heavy moments that don’t require the main cast on set.

At first glance, this might seem like a routine production adjustment. However, Alonzo’s impressive résumé actually makes the decision quite surprising. In particular, he previously contributed to major superhero films such as Deadpool, The Batman, and Captain America: Brave New World — each of which is known for its intense action and striking visual direction.
Who’s Taking Over the Director’s Role Behind the Scenes?
Meanwhile, fellow insider MyTimeToShine reports that Alonzo will be replaced by James Young, a seasoned action coordinator known for his work with the Russo Brothers. Notably, Young was heavily involved in crafting the stunning action in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame. For that reason, he seems like a logical choice to elevate Avengers: Doomsday even further. Moreover, his extensive experience adds credibility to Marvel’s decision.
A Strategic Move for Avengers: Doomsday?
While replacing a second unit director mid-production isn’t unheard of, making that change with someone of Young’s caliber strongly suggests that Marvel is serious about maintaining the visual tone of Avengers: Doomsday sharp and consistent. In fact, the second unit plays a crucial role in Marvel films, especially when managing large ensemble casts and sprawling set pieces. Consequently, this replacement could ultimately enhance the film’s overall pacing and polish. Altogether, the move reflects Marvel’s ongoing commitment to high production standards. Taken together, these adjustments demonstrate Marvel’s commitment to quality, even behind the scenes.
