The Spider-Noir series continues to attract major attention for its unconventional storytelling and darker reinterpretation of a familiar superhero mythos. Moreover, the showrunner has now revealed detailed insights into why Nicolas Cage was chosen and how this decision fundamentally shaped the identity of the series.
Spider-Noir Creative Vision Behind Aging the Character
From the very beginning, showrunner Oren Uziel wanted to take Spider-Noir in a bold new direction. Rather than retelling familiar origin stories, he aimed to explore what happens when a hero has already lived through years of trauma and responsibility.
Uziel explained:
“When I first came on, the first thing I asked is if I could age him up,”
This creative decision was important because it allowed the story to shift tone significantly. Furthermore, it opened the door for deeper emotional exploration and a more mature narrative structure.
He further added:
“Because it’s just … it’s a story that I [would] be more comfortable telling, that I’m more familiar with. I’m not a high school kid anymore. I really thought, let’s see what happens to this character if we jump forward in time and see just what he’s been through and how it’s changed him, and how living a long life as The Spider might affect that character.”
Consequently, this approach gives Spider-Noir a more reflective and grounded tone, making it stand apart from previous Spider-Verse entries.
Why Nicolas Cage Was the Perfect Casting Choice in Spider-Noir
Once the decision was made to age the character, Nicolas Cage naturally became the standout choice. Interestingly, the casting was not just about performance, but also about shaping the character’s identity from the ground up.
Uziel said:
“And then that also allowed us to cast Nic Cage,”
In addition, Cage’s involvement influenced the creative process in unexpected ways, pushing the character into more experimental territory.
He also added:
“And then, together with Nic, I think we just created something that I think no one’s ever seen before, and that felt really satisfying.”
Moreover, Cage’s distinctive acting style brought a surreal intensity to Spider-Noir, helping the character feel both human and otherworldly at the same time. This balance became essential in defining the series’ unique tone.
Ben Reilly’s Transformation Into The Spider
In Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage portrays an older version of Ben Reilly, referred to simply as “The Spider.” This interpretation is significantly different from traditional portrayals, as it leans heavily into psychological transformation rather than superhero action alone.
Uziel explained:
“One-thousand percent, and it’s something I wouldn’t have done myself without him,”
He continued:
“I mean, we started talking, and he was really pressing to figure out what it felt like, and what really happened to him when he became a spider. And we really pushed and pushed and got to a place where this guy is really more spider than man at this point. And he’s almost cosplaying as a human. It’s hard work for him to walk around in this human form.”
Because of this approach, the character becomes far more symbolic, representing the struggle between identity and instinct. Additionally, it introduces a layered psychological conflict that strengthens the emotional core of Spider-Noir.
The series is developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot alongside industry heavyweights Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Furthermore, this collaboration ensures a strong creative foundation rooted in both innovation and established Spider-Verse storytelling.
The show is currently streaming on MGM+ and will release globally on Prime Video on May 27. Additionally, audiences will have the option to watch it in both black-and-white and color versions, enhancing its noir aesthetic and visual flexibility.
Spider-Noir delivers a refreshing and bold reinterpretation of the Spider-Man universe. Thanks to its decision to age the character and Nicolas Cage’s transformative performance, the series offers a deeper, darker, and more emotionally complex experience than traditional superhero storytelling.
