Mike Colter, who portrayed Luke Cage in the Marvel Netflix series, has revealed why he prefers to keep the character grounded. Specifically, he doesn’t want Luke Cage to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. According to Colter, the character works best in street-level stories, rather than facing universe-level threats like Thanos or Doctor Doom. By keeping Luke Cage in street-level adventures, Marvel ensures he stays true to his roots. As a result, this approach gives fans a more personal and relatable story experience.
Luke Cage Stays a Street-Level Hero in Avengers: Secret Wars
During a Q&A at the Edmonton Expo, the MCU star humorously dismissed the idea of facing cosmic villains. For instance, they referenced the Hulk’s fate in Avengers: Infinity War as a warning:
“Did you see what they did to Hulk? Come on, man, if they’re gonna do that to Hulk, they’d have Thanos absolutely wipe the floor with Luke.”
Colter emphasized that Luke Cage works best in street-level adventures. For example, he has previously teamed up with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist in The Defenders. This approach suits his character’s strengths and allows for more grounded storytelling, making the hero relatable to fans. Moreover, fans appreciate that Luke Cage’s street-level stories focus on social issues, justice, and community struggles in New York City—elements that would be difficult to highlight in a cosmic-scale Avengers story.
Luke Cage’s MCU Future and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Although there are rumors about Luke Cage returning in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, especially after Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones confirmation, still, the MCU star remained vague about their future.
“I don’t know why people keep asking me this. There are no signs. It’s not like they’ve just recently revived one of the Marvel Netflix shows.”
With Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for 2027, fans can still enjoy Luke Cage’s adventures on Disney+ while waiting for potential street-level team-ups. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will focus on assembling a team to oppose Mayor Kingpin. This naturally opens the door for Luke Cage’s return without forcing him into cosmic-level battles. This approach allows Marvel to maintain continuity for the Netflix characters while gradually reintegrating them into the MCU, without overshadowing their unique storylines.
Colter’s decision to skip Avengers: Secret Wars keeps Luke Cage true to his street-level roots. As a result, this lets Marvel explore mature themes, character growth, and interpersonal dynamics that might get lost in large-scale Avengers events. At the same time, fans can revisit Luke Cage’s solo series and The Defenders on Disney+, keeping his story alive while awaiting new MCU developments.
