Tom Holland has shared how working with Christopher Nolan on The Odyssey changed the way he views filmmaking. While promoting the upcoming epic, the Marvel star explained that Nolan’s practical approach could also influence future Spider-Man movies. As a result, Holland believes superhero films can become even more immersive by relying less on visual effects and more on real filmmaking techniques.
Tom Holland Praises Christopher Nolan’s Practical Filmmaking Style
During The Odyssey press day in London, Tom Holland spoke about Christopher Nolan’s unique approach to making movies. According to Holland, Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking creates an environment that encourages creativity instead of relying heavily on visual effects.
Holland said:
“[Christopher Nolan]’s desire to be practical and to keep things in camera creates an atmosphere on-set which really inspires people to be creative and think outside the box. There are things I saw on this movie which I’ve never seen before, and they’re very simple. It just requires forward thinking and planning.”
The actor explained that many of the impressive moments on set were achieved through careful planning rather than complicated CGI. As a result, everyone involved had to think creatively to bring Nolan’s vision to life.
Tom Holland Believes Marvel Can Learn From Nolan’s Approach
After discussing his experience on The Odyssey, Tom Holland revealed that he believes Marvel Studios could benefit from a similar filmmaking philosophy.
Although he loves making superhero films, Holland thinks practical effects can make audiences feel more connected to what they see on screen.
He said:
“I come from the kind of superhero space, which I absolutely adore. I love playing [Spider-Man].
Holland then added:
I think there are things that we could do in the future that can improve those movies by being more practical and finding ways to make people believe that what they’re watching is real.”
His comments suggest that combining practical filmmaking with modern visual effects could help future Spider-Man films feel even more realistic.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Already Embraced Practical Filmmaking
Interestingly, Holland confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already started following some of Christopher Nolan’s filmmaking principles.
He explained that the production relied on practical elements whenever possible.
“We’ve made a real suit, and we did real stunts, stuff like that. I think that lots of people can learn from what Chris is able to do.”
Instead of depending entirely on CGI, the upcoming Marvel film features a real Spider-Man suit and practical stunt work. Therefore, fans may notice a more grounded feel when the movie arrives in theaters.
Tom Holland Has Two Major Movies Releasing in July
Beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
The highly anticipated film arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.
Just two weeks later, Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
With both films releasing in the same month, audiences will soon see Holland showcase two very different performances while also witnessing how Nolan’s practical filmmaking philosophy may influence the future of Spider-Man.
Tom Holland believes Christopher Nolan’s practical approach to filmmaking offers valuable lessons for superhero movies. After working on The Odyssey, he now sees more opportunities to use real suits, practical stunts, and in-camera effects in future Spider-Man films. In fact, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already adopted some of those ideas. If audiences respond positively, Marvel could continue embracing a more practical style in future Spider-Man adventures.
