Doctor Strange will reportedly play a pivotal role in the upcoming films. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is currently producing Avengers: Doomsday. In addition, Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as The Russo Brothers, are directing the film, which is scheduled to arrive next year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will then follow in 2027.
Doctor Strange’s Alleged Alignment in Avengers: Doomsday
On a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast, Jeff Sneider of The InSneider said he heard that Doctor Strange will join Doctor Doom’s side in the upcoming Avengers movies. In addition, Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange in the MCU.
This is just a rumor at this time. Marvel has not revealed any official plot details for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. They also have not formally announced Cumberbatch’s casting in either Avengers movie. Fans are already speculating what this shift in alignment could mean for the multiverse saga. This is especially intriguing given Doctor Strange’s usual role as a hero.
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse Stakes
That said, it would make sense if Avengers: Secret Wars stays somewhat faithful to the Marvel Comics event by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribić. In the story, Doom uses the Beyonders’ power to create Battleworld after the incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610 destroys the multiverse. Believing that most of Earth-616’s heroes have died during the incursion, Doctor Strange joins Doom’s team. He becomes known as “Sheriff Strange,” which gives him control over the Thor Corps.
After finding some survivors from Earth-616, Doctor Strange betrays Doom. The villain then ultimately kills him. These stakes show that Doctor Strange could play a crucial role in the MCU’s multiverse storyline. His actions may be pivotal to the outcome of Secret Wars.
Rumor vs Reality: Doctor Strange in the Movies
Should Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars really put Strange on Doom’s side, that doesn’t mean this is how things will play out in the movies. As noted by The Hot Mic’s co-host John Rocha,
“They’re not going to follow beat-by-beat what happens in the comics. They didn’t do that with Civil War, and they didn’t do that with the Infinity Gauntlet Saga, so I can’t imagine that they would do that.”
This statement reassures fans that Marvel may take creative liberties, ensuring surprises while keeping the story engaging and unpredictable. If Doctor Strange does side with Doom, fans could see fresh team-ups, unexpected betrayals, and a more complex narrative for the Sorcerer Supreme. This could also redefine alliances in the MCU, as heroes navigate shifting loyalties and multiverse consequences.
Moreover, Strange’s potential transformation from hero to anti-hero would create a more layered character arc, adding emotional depth to the storyline.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Given these timelines, Marvel has ample space to introduce Doctor Strange in surprising ways. He could help shape the multiverse saga and keep audiences engaged with high-stakes drama. Fans will undoubtedly watch closely for any hints in upcoming trailers or interviews.
