Initially, the creative team behind Daredevil: Born Again planned a highly focused, character-driven episode within the MCU. The goal was to bring two iconic street-level MCU figures together in an unexpected way. Writer Jesse Wigutow explained that the team wanted a “bottle episode”—a television installment that used a limited budget, only a few sets, and focused tightly on a small group of characters. As a result, this format allowed the show to explore character psychology more deeply without relying on large-scale action sequences or multiple locations.
The central premise focused on a narrative collision between Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, the Punisher, and Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, Echo. Wigutow joined the project to help develop this concept. He described it as:
“Crossing into the Daredevil space.”
The episode idea involved the two characters spending:
“An interesting night together.”
Wigutow made it clear that the concept was intended to be purely narrative, stating:
“This was meant to be purely narratively engaging, not romantic.”
The Scrapped Echo Episode Concept
The proposed episode promised a tense and philosophically rich encounter. Notably, Echo is a deaf Native American warrior guided by a strong moral code and a deep connection to her community. She would have served as a fascinating counterpoint to the Punisher, a brutal force driven by black-and-white morality and relentless vengeance. The confined, low-budget nature of a bottle episode would have amplified the tension, emphasizing dialogue and psychological interplay over action.
Despite its potential, the team ultimately scrapped the episode during the show’s long and reportedly “crooked” development process. Wigutow clarified that it reflected a “former idea” that the writers reworked as the series evolved. Nevertheless, he left the door open for its potential return, saying:
“Who knows, maybe it comes back again,”
Suggesting that Marvel still sees value in exploring this pairing.
Implications for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
Meanwhile, excitement is building for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which is expected to premiere on Disney+ in March 2026. Following this, the new season will pick up after the dramatic events of the first, where Wilson Fisk consolidated his power as Mayor of New York, and Matt Murdock’s life remained in turmoil. Under Marvel’s new strategy, led by Brad Winderbaum, the company is shifting its focus. Instead of producing limited series that feed into films, Marvel now emphasizes multi-season shows with long-term story arcs. Consequently, Marvel has positioned Daredevil: Born Again as a flagship for this approach. This change allows the show to explore its ensemble cast more deeply and develop richer storylines.
Although the Echo/Punisher episode didn’t appear in Season 1, Season 2 promises to expand the street-level corner of the MCU even further. In addition, Marvel has confirmed that Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones. She will return to the street-level MCU, adding more depth to the upcoming season. Additionally, rumors suggest that Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist may also return. As a result, this sets the stage for a potential full Netflix-era Defenders reunion, exciting fans who are eager for interconnected stories.
Fans may feel disappointed about the scrapped Echo episode. However, the concept reflects Marvel’s commitment to storytelling depth and character exploration. By emphasizing narrative over spectacle, Daredevil: Born Again continues to build its reputation as one of the most compelling MCU series.. As Season 2 approaches, viewers can expect further surprises and intense character interactions. The potential return of scrapped ideas will help keep the street-level MCU fresh and unpredictable.
